How Much Energy Does Your Video Game System Use?

If your child received a computer gaming system for the holidays, little thought may have been given to how much electricity it used, especially if left on for long periods of time.

The National Resources Defense Council recently conducted a study and found systems in U.S. homes consumed the equivalent to the annual electricity use of the city of San Diego. So where does your system fall in terms of energy use and cost to play?

Annual Energy Use and Costs For Three Popular Gaming Systmems

Remember, the easiest and most effective way to reduce your system’s energy use it to make sure it’s turned off when not in use. According to NRDC, a game console that is left on 24/7 will use approximately 10 times more annual energy than one that is turned off after use.
